Martin Luther King Jr
He was born on January 15th ,1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He emerged as a central figure
in the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s. His leadership was
solidified in 1955 during the Montgomery bus Boycott in Alabama, a pacific protest
against the racial segregation in public transport. This movement was the beginning of
many pacific actions that sought to dismantle segregationist laws in the southern United
States.
In 1963, King organized the historic March on Washington for job and freedom, where
he pronounced his emblematic speech “I have a dream”. In it, he articulated his vision of
a society where people are judged by their character and not by their skin color. This
speech became a landmark in civil right history and it solidified King as a moral leader
around the world.
His unwavering defense of the equality and justice was recognized in 1964, when he
was given the Nobel Peace Prized. Even though this recognition, King continued facing
challenges, including arrests and threats. However, he kept his commitment whit
nonviolence and the civil disobedience as a tool for social change.
On April 4th, 1968, while he was in Memphis, Tennessee, supporting the workers on
strike, King was murdered. His death triggered a wave of shock across the country.
Even though his tragic end, his legacy will last as a symbol of the fight for equality and
human rights.
In recognition to his contribution, in 1986 Martin Luther King Jr Day was stablished as a
national holiday in the United States, it is celebrated every third Monday of January. His
life and work continued inspiring generations looking for justice and equality.
